On March 12, 1934, Roscoe Lawin Howard became the 13th child of Jesse James Howard and Dollie Angeline Jennings. He made his entrance into this world at Waxahachie, TX and grew up in Lubbock where he attended Iles Elementary School & Dunbar High School. He attended Jarvis Christian College in Hawkins for 2 years until he was drafted into the U.S. Army.
Roscoe married Mary Jo Bunton & from this union he fathered 4 children: Mark, Mary, Roscoe & Gregory. He leaves to cherish his memory, his 4 children & their mother, his wife, Renetta Womack Howard, whom he married in 1979 & with whom he moved to Port Gibson, Mississippi & lived until his demise on March 3, 2009; a daughter Crystal Womack; grandchildren, Ruffels, Maria, Lala Ada, Tawna, Tammy, Chantae, Japal, Jasmine, Roscoe II, Tangy, Ember & Julius. He also leaves, 2 great-grandchildren & a sister, Betty Jenkins of Los Angeles, CA & a brother, John Howard of Mesquite. His parents & other siblings preceded him to glory.
Roscoe grew up in Lubbock where he was a member of Bethel A.M.E. Church & an ordained Steward. He also served as a Class Leader for many years & sang in the Men's chorus. He was a 33rd degree Mason of the Rio Grande Consistory #24 & the Pride of Lubbock Lodge. He spent most of his working life at Hogland Office Equipment in Lubbock where he was an office machine technician.
In 1996, Roscoe & his wife made their home in Port Gibson, Mississippi where he later opened his own business, H & H Office Equipment until the building was destroyed by fire in 1999. Roscoe affiliated with St. Peter A.M.E. & served as a Trustee & a member of the Male Chorus as well as an honorary member of the Women's Missionary society. He was also a member of the Claiborne County NAACP Branch.
Services will be at 2:00pm Tuesday, March 10, 2009 at Bethel A.M.E. Church. Burial will follow at Resthaven Cemetery under the care of Wilsons' Funeral Directors of Wolfforth.
