Robert Elton Cherry, friends called him "Cherry", 84, of Lubbock and formerly of Victoria, TX was born December 17, 1929, in Spur, TX to A.H. "Bert" and Ona Fay (Cornelius) Cherry. He married Joyce A. Hagar at Steele Hill Baptist Church, July 24, 1949. He attended Texas Tech University before starting his career with Soutwestern Bell Telephone Co., "Ma Bell" in Lubbock, Tx. He retired December 1983 after 32 years and 10 months. They moved to Midland where he started his own phone companies, C&E, and also C&H. He loved his wife and family, and above all, his Lord. He loved to take his family on vacations to the Great Smoky Mountains where they could listen to his favorite gospel music amidst the beauty of God's creation.
Cherry went to be with the Lord, Monday October 13, 2014.
He is survived by his wife of 65 years: Joyce Cherry of Lubbock; his 4 daughters: Robbie Hilton (Phil) of Idalou, TX, Theresa "Tari" Pilgreen (James) of Horseshoe Bay, TX, Kayla Watson of Idalou, TX and Carla Cherry of Lubbock, TX; 10 Grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren: a brother: Glenn Cherry of Kansas City, MO; and a sister: Ophelia Swaringen of Graham, TX.
The family will greet friends from 6 to 9pm Wednesday, October 15, 2014 at Wilsons' Funeral Directors in Wolfforth. Services will be at 10:00am Thursday October 16, 2014 at First Baptist Church in Idalou with Philip Hilton (son-in-law) and Vestal Blakely officiating.
