Leo Lee Thurman was born October 18, 1919 in Muscogee, OK, and passed away October 26, 2011 in Lubbock, TX at the age of 92 years and 8 days. He was the son of Benjamin Lee Thurman and Daisy Dale Norsworthy. Leo married Opal Laverne Fain March 27, 1943 in Lubbock. Leo was a veteran of the U.S. Army Air Corp. during WWII, serving from Jan. 1942 until 1946. He was a truck driver and mechanic and his primary duty was to drive bomber crews out to their planes. He drove the crew of the Enola Gay that delivered the first atomic bomb on Japan. After the war, he worked for many years repairing heavy construction equipment throughout the Panhandle and for several years owned and managed a Texaco service station in Lubbock. In later years he repaired and rebuilt riding lawn mowers independently.
Leo is survived by his bride of 68 years, Opal Thurman, 6 nieces and 2 nephews. He was predeceased by 2 sons: Stephen Lee who died in infancy and Freddie Lee who died August 8, 2002.
The family will greet friends from 3 to 5pm today, October 28, 2011 at Wilsons' Funeral Directors Chapel in Wolfforth. Military graveside services will be at 12:00pm Saturday, October 29, 2011 at City of Lubbock Cemetery under the care of Wilsons' Funeral Directors of Wolfforth.
